My mom was diagnosed with FMD about 5 years back. They tried the Angio balloon treatment but it was unsuccessful and couldn't get through the blockage. She then had surgery....again not much help...Shortly after that she had complete renal failure in that kidney and has had surgery to have it removed. She also has blockage in her other kidney. I got a call last night telling me she 100% failure in her remaining kidney. As of immediately she starting dialysis 3 times a week.
My questions is:
*Can she survive with this treatment for an extended period of time without the use of her kidneys or is this only a short term fix? Also, is she still able to be a candidate for a transplant with this disease?
She doesn't want to talk about it, but I need some answers.
I have also heard conflicting info about whether or not this is a genetic disease. Right now I'm not worried for myself...I have had no symptoms. But my mom did say they said they probably would have been more successful with treatment if it had been diagnosed years before. She also said she thinks its genetic. Should I be worried as well? My husband has a lot of questions concerning this that I don't know how to answer.
I lost my dad last year to leukemia and I think my mom is trying to shelter me by not telling me more of what is going on with her condition. All the info I have got has been from my brother that stills lives at home and not from her. I really hate being in the dark. I think this would be a little easier if I understood more about the disease. I would appreciate any info anyone has on this. Thank you for listening.
